Botanic Garden Conservation International’s (BGCI) 2020 Red List of Acer shows that 1 in 5 of the 158 worldwide maple species are threated with extinction in the wild. The objective of this most recent phase was to conserve some of the oldest and most noteworthy specimens from England, Wales, and Scotland-a project that involves a number of gardens working together to save this beautiful tree.Ĭonserving Acer griseum highlights the threats to maple species in particular and tree species in general around the world. ![]() This past August I travelled to England and Wales to continue a project working on the conservation of paperbark maple, a trip that was an extension of a project that I have been working on for close to 10 years, and one that has taken me has taken me across the US, into Great Britain, and throughout China. Paperbark maple’s attributes alone make it worth promoting, but its conservation status has lent additional importance to working with it. Less well-known is that despite its popularity, paperbark maple is listed as endangered in its native habitat in central China. The tree is also well-known for its brilliant yellow autumn foliage.As one of the most beloved and desirable small shade trees, paperbark maple ( Acer griseum) is well-known for its dense, uniform crown, exquisite cinnamon-copper-colored bark, and excellent orange and bright red autumn color. While not a true Paperbark Maple, Acer griseum 'Sango kaku' is a cultivar of the Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) with similar peeling bark that is a bright coral-red color.'Ruby' is also slightly smaller than the species, making it an excellent choice for smaller landscapes. Acer griseum 'Ruby' is known for its vibrant red fall foliage, which contrasts beautifully with its peeling cinnamon-colored bark.The tree is also more upright than the species and slightly smaller in size. Acer griseum 'JFS-KW202': This cultivar, also known as the Ice Dragon Paperbark Maple, has peeling bark that is a striking white color rather than the typical cinnamon brown.This cultivar is also known for its compact habit and small size. Acer griseum 'Cinnamon Flake': Like 'Gingerbread,' 'Cinnamon Flake' has peeling bark that is a rich cinnamon color.'Gingerbread' is also known for its brilliant orange-red fall foliage. Acer griseum 'Gingerbread': This cultivar is named after its cinnamon-colored bark, which peels away in thin sheets to reveal a smooth, shiny surface beneath.In fact, in hotter climates, they may benefit from some shade from the hot afternoon sun. Paperbark Maples prefer full sun to partial shade but can tolerate more shade than other maple species. To improve drainage and fertility, you may need to amend your soil with organic matter such as compost or leaf mold if it is heavy or compacted.
